Traditional medicine praises viburnum. It is considered an elixir of vigor and health. The healing capabilities of the bush are almost limitless. However, let us turn into skeptics. Let's consider beneficial features and contraindications of viburnum red as a set of qualities of a single whole. It’s no secret that what helps one person can cause irreparable harm to another.

Red viburnum: beneficial properties

The following are concentrated in different parts of the plant:

  • carotene and ascorbic acid, which stimulate the immune system;
  • vitamin K, involved in the formation of platelets;
  • higher fatty acids responsible for metabolism;
  • tannins and phytoncides with antimicrobial effects;
  • pectins that bind and neutralize toxins;
  • phytosterols that reduce the concentration of bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis

Back in Soviet times, in the laboratory of the Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (formerly VILR, and now VILAR), experiments were carried out using drugs based on viburnum.

And this is what they showed:

  • decoction and infusion of the plant bark stimulate the formation of platelets, and reduces blood loss from various types of wounds and internal bleeding;
  • the ability to stop blood loss was also found in preparations made from flowers and foliage;
  • a decoction of the bark tones the muscles of the uterus, eases painful menstruation;
  • fruit squeeze stimulates the formation and outflow of urine, restores electrolytic balance, dilates blood vessels, increases heart contractions, and lowers blood pressure;

Used to treat women's diseases, diseases of the stomach and biliary tract. Used as a vitamin stimulant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory.

Viburnum red from pressure

The berries of red viburnum or common viburnum are good for the heart. A mixture of seven plant hydrocarbons - iridoids - was discovered in the fruits, which was initially mistaken for a single complex substance - viburnin.

The bitter taste of the berries is the “merit” of those same iridoids. But this small drawback pales in comparison to the benefits that viburnin can bring.

A mixture of hydrocarbons energizes the heart. It improves the conductivity of electrical impulses. The strength of contractions increases, blood vessels dilate, and blood pressure decreases.

Phytosterols are also involved in adjusting cardiac activity, which prevent excess cholesterol from depositing on the walls of blood vessels. The use of bark infusion has a clear anti-atherosclerotic effect. It is prescribed as an antihypertensive (pressure-lowering) agent for hypertension.

Viburnum for women

Viburnum bark stops uterine bleeding, regardless of the nature of its origin. Whether it is a natural reaction after childbirth or a consequence of any gynecological disease.

The tincture is prepared from fresh young bark. Medicinal raw materials are harvested in early spring before the buds revive. Thin side branches are cut to a length of 10-25 cm. The bark is removed in a whole tube. Darkened, woody areas are removed and discarded.

The prepared raw materials are randomly crushed. Fill with 40% alcohol in a 1:1 ratio. Infuse for a month in a dark place. Take for inflammation of hemorrhoids, uterine bleeding and high blood pressure, 1-2 tablespoons before meals 2-3 times a day for two or three weeks.

Contraindications to the use of viburnum are directly related to its beneficial properties. Hypotonic patients are not recommended to frequently consume any products made from this plant, as viburnum can sharply reduce blood pressure.

Ingestion may also be unsafe for people prone to blood clots. This is due to the fact that any medicinal elixirs, especially those prepared from the bark, increase blood clotting.

Due to its ability to stimulate diuresis, viburnum is contraindicated for people suffering from diseases associated with impaired salt metabolism.

Viburnum is a shrub that previously belonged to the Honeysuckle family. Today the plant belongs to the genus Viburnum, the Adoxaceae family. Its fruits are distinguished by their bright red color, which is why the berry is considered a highly decorative natural product. The berries have a sweet-sour, astringent taste with a slight bitterness.

Five forms of viburnum grow in the natural environment; they are widely used for landscaping various areas. Basically, the shrub is used for decorative purposes. The bark of viburnum is grayish-brown, its shoots are bare, sometimes with a slight reddish tint. Fragrant flowers are collected in inflorescences, the flowers are pinkish-white.

The plant blooms from late May to July, the fruits ripen in August-September. This tree is considered fast-growing; in a year it can grow up to 40 cm. In total, viburnum lives about half a century. The official raw material (this means used in evidence-based medicine) is considered to be viburnum bark, which demonstrates strong medicinal properties.

Chemical composition

In addition to the bark in folk recipes berries, leaves, roots are used. Biologically active substances are found in almost all parts of the plant.

Viburnum common - description of chemical composition:

The rich chemical composition of viburnum makes it a remedy that accelerates healing processes, strengthens the body and helps it resist viruses during the so-called cold season.

Healing properties of viburnum

A medicinal plant can become a “guest” of a home medicine cabinet.

Application of viburnum:

  • Stop bleeding. The hemostatic effect of the plant is based on the fact that viburnum chemicals are capable of inactivating fibrinolysin. That is, viburnum preparations can resolve already formed blood clots. And this can be valuable in the postoperative period. But if the patient is prone to thrombosis, treatment requires caution.
  • Improvement of stomach function. Viburnum bark can eliminate the symptoms of gastritis. It creates a protective film on the mucous membrane of the organ. And this film is formed due to the precipitation of protein molecules of mucus by tannins. But if a patient takes medications and drinks viburnum, he should remember that this same protective film acts as a barrier to the absorption of medicinal substances.
  • Pain relief. Isovaleric acid in viburnum provides the antispasmodic and sedative effect of the plant, due to which the pain really subsides. You should not combine viburnum with sedatives and sleeping pills, as the combined effect may be excessive. Or a dosage adjustment is required.
  • Normalization of metabolism. Improvement of lipid metabolism occurs due to unsaturated fatty acids. They also reduce cholesterol levels in the blood. It is also noteworthy that all parts of the plant contain chlorogenic acid, which slows down the penetration of glucose molecules into the systemic bloodstream. This means that the plant also has a hypoglycemic effect. The plant is used for diabetes, but with caution (especially for those who are prone to a sharp drop in sugar).
  • For women, the natural product is also useful. Kalina regulates hormonal levels, in the postpartum period it can be prescribed to improve uterine contractions. The plant has a positive effect on estrogen levels, which helps reduce the symptoms of menopause and even eliminates the pain of menstruation.
  • In the treatment of skin diseases Viburnum is also used. For example, its decoction is used for medicinal baths. Lotions and compresses can help with furunculosis and psoriasis, pustular rash.
  • For hypertension Viburnum reduces headaches accompanying high blood pressure. In general, the composition of the plant helps it become a useful remedy for the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. If the blood pressure is not very high, viburnum can normalize it.

And, of course, the product is actively used for colds. It has a mild expectorant effect, and it also dilates the bronchi. For bronchitis, viburnum helps get rid of an annoying cough. It relieves shortness of breath and saturates the blood with oxygen. The diaphoretic effect of plant materials also helps with colds accompanied by fever.

Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor of the department. Vegetable Growing RGAU-Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K.A. Timiryazeva

(Viburnum opulus)- a branched shrub or small tree 1.5-4 m high from the honeysuckle family with grayish-brown fissured bark of the trunks and bare branches. As a medicinal plant, it does not need advertising.

Bark is the main medicinal raw material

On the site, viburnum is most often planted as an ornamental plant and to produce fruits, which in modern varieties are not only healthy, but also very tasty. But you should still start with the raw material, which is the main one for viburnum in pharmacological terms - this is the bark, which is harvested in the spring, during sap flow (in April-May), when it is easily separated. But remember that decorative types of viburnum are not suitable for this purpose. You need to be sure that it is the common viburnum growing on your site. It should be collected from side branches, not old, 2-3 years old, and especially without affecting the main trunk. On the cut branches, make circular cuts every 25 cm with a knife and connect them with longitudinal cuts; after this the bark is easily removed. You can combine spring pruning with the procurement of raw materials. The shelf life of raw materials is 4 years.

Viburnum bark contains viburnin glycoside, resins, tannins and other substances; fruits - invert sugar (up to 32%), tannins (up to 3%) of the pyrocatechol group, isovaleric, acetic, caprylic, butyric, linolenic and palmitic acids. In addition, the bark contains vitamin C and K, which have a high hemostatic effect. It is thanks to vitamin K that nettle also has a hemostatic effect.

Viburnum bark is used as a hemostatic agent, mainly for uterine and hemorrhoidal bleeding, in the form of a decoction, which is prepared from 1 teaspoon of bark and 1 glass of water. Take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day before meals. Externally used for lotions and instillation into the nose for nosebleeds. You can use the bark in the form of an extract, which is obtained by pouring 1 part of viburnum bark with a 50% alcohol solution (10 parts). The extract is prescribed orally, 20-30 drops per dose 2-3 times a day before meals.

Both the decoction and the extract can be used for rinsing for periodontal disease and bleeding gums.

A decoction of the bark and young leafy flowering shoots is drunk as an analgesic, expectorant, antispasmodic, and also a sedative. It is taken for diathesis. In addition, patients with diathesis successfully use a decoction of a mixture of viburnum bark and chamomile (1:4 ratio).

Both the decoction and the extract of viburnum bark have a hypolipidemic effect and reduce blood cholesterol.

Fruits are also tasty medicine

In domestic folk medicine, in addition to viburnum bark, fruits collected after the first frost, when they acquire a sweetish taste, are used, as well as flowers, juice and seeds of viburnum. But it should be remembered that each “freezing-thawing” cycle on a branch leads to loss of vitamin C. Therefore, it is most effective to freeze the fruits in freezer, having previously separated them from the stalks, and stored until use. The fruits are well stored fresh, hanging in clusters in the attic. They are used as needed. In this form, viburnum is stored almost until spring and this is how supplies were stored in Russian villages - sugar was a luxury item and the brew was not made from all the gifts of the site, but they tried to make do with other methods of procurement.

Viburnum fruits are harvested at their full maturity in dry weather, cut or torn off along with the stalks. They can be dried in the air under canopies, in attics, hanging in bunches, but it is best to dry them in ovens and dryers at a temperature of 60-80°C, making sure that the raw materials do not burn. Dried fruits are separated from stalks and branches.

The fruits contain up to 20% dry matter, up to 11% sugars, 3.1% organic acids, pectin substances, which absorb all the bad things that accumulate as a result of the digestion of unhealthy foods like smoked meats and fast food, 40 mg% vitamin C, tannins and coloring matter, P-active polyphenols (strengthens capillaries), flavonols. The seeds contain fatty oil (up to 21%).

An infusion or decoction of berries is taken orally for stomach or intestinal ulcers, boils, carbuncles, eczema, and skin ulcers. Juice from raw berries is recommended externally for acne, freckles, lichen, and internally for bronchial asthma and hypertension. A warm decoction of berries with honey is good for colds. - cough, hoarseness, choking, fever, diarrhea, dropsy, liver disease and jaundice.

Berries boiled with honey (see Viburnum stewed with honey, Viburnum in honey), take 1 teaspoon several times a day for cough and associated symptoms, such as suffocation and hoarseness, as well as loss of voice.

When coughing, for those for whom alcohol is not contraindicated, the following recipe is used in the Balkan countries: A glass of viburnum juice is mixed with 100 g of cognac and 2 tablespoons of honey, mixed thoroughly and taken 1 tablespoon 3 times a day for a strong cough. The big plus of this recipe is that this mixture keeps quite well in the refrigerator.

Berries infused with hot honey for 6-7 hours are used for bronchitis, pneumonia and liver diseases (See Medicinal viburnum tincture). An infusion of flowers and leaves is used to gargle for sore throat.

Fresh berries and an infusion of them are useful for gastritis with reduced gastric secretion. It is recommended to eat 1-2 cups of viburnum berries with honey daily, adding it to taste. According to traditional healers, this also helps prevent gastrointestinal cancer.
