Preparing food for making compote does not take any time at all, since the berries are most often used not defrosted. Some housewives prefer to keep the mass of berries warm for 30-40 minutes, taking them out of the freezer, so that later they give juice and boil better. The total cooking time for frozen berry compote depends on several factors:

  • volume of the pan - boil water over high heat for 10-15 minutes for 3-4 liters of water, if the power of the stove is low, it may take a little longer;
  • compote of soft-skinned berries (sea buckthorn, strawberries, raspberries) is cooked after repeated boiling, which takes about 8 minutes, for 3-5 minutes;
  • if the berries have a thick skin (currants, gooseberries) - you need 10-13 minutes;
  • after this, the compote must be infused and cooled to a tolerably hot temperature for 40-50 minutes, so that the juice becomes more saturated.

In total, the total time for preparing frozen berry compote without defrosting is about 1.5 hours. While the water is boiling, you can stay away from the kitchen or do other dishes.

How to cook berry compote correctly

In the process of preparing compote, it is necessary to preserve the maximum benefit of the berries removed from the freezer, so they are placed last. In addition to the recipe, various spices and citrus fruits are often added to highlight the taste; this is done before placing the berries in the pan.

Fact! The number of components remains virtually unchanged. For compote you need 500 g of any frozen berries, about 3 liters of water and a glass of sugar. If the compote is made from sour cherriesor red currant, then the amount of sugar can be added to taste, or in the amount of 1/2 cup.

If this is your first time cooking super healthy drink, then you shouldn’t worry, because the instructions are very simple, and it’s difficult to get confused in them:

  1. Pour the prepared sugar into a 5-6 liter pan.
  2. Pour a measured amount of water, preferably filtered, then the compote will be softer and healthier.
  3. As soon as the water boils, add all the other ingredients except the berries and cook for 5-6 minutes. If there are no other ingredients, then you can skip this step.
  4. Then add the undefrosted berries; the heat should be lowered to the middle.
  5. Cook for 5 minutes after re-boiling if they have soft and thin skins, and 10-13 minutes if the skins are thick.
  6. As soon as the time is up, cover the compote with a lid and remove it from the burner for 40-50 minutes.
  7. You can pour the compote without straining. If it contains too many boiled berries such as sea buckthorn or strawberries, then pour the mixture through a colander or sieve.

When using spices and citrus fruits, straining will help avoid excessive bitterness and aroma release from spices.

Ideally, to prepare compote, you need to use raw materials that you have prepared yourself for the winter. To do this, rinse the berries well and dry them using an electric dryer or directly on a towel. Then a film is placed at the bottom of the food container, absolutely dry berries are poured in, and another film is placed on top. Close the lid and wrap with a third piece of cling film. In this way, you can protect the product from the formation of excess liquid during the freezing process.

The less ice there is in the berries, the richer the compote will turn out in the end. There are other tips and secrets that will help you create an amazing drink for all occasions:

  • 1 orange or lemon, from which the juice is squeezed, and then the quarters with peel are thrown into the drink, will add a special piquancy to the taste of the compote, making it invigorating;
  • the contents of a vanilla pod, or 2 spoons of vanilla extract added before the berries, will create a charming coziness and warming atmosphere. You can reinforce them with 2-3 cinnamon sticks, which are then used for decoration;
  • 4-5 cloves and 2-3 allspice peas will add incredible piquancy to the drink, just don’t overdo it, otherwise it will turn out bitter;
  • Instead of sugar, you can use honey to taste, but it should be added at the final stage of preparation, when the product has cooled to 40-45 degrees Celsius, otherwise the benefits of sweetness will be destroyed;
  • if there is a party planned, then you can pour a little red wine, cognac or rum into the cooled compote liquid - an excellent addition for alcoholic entertainment!

This is how different, tasty, healthy and interesting frozen berry compote can be. What happens if you defrost the fruits first? In general, it’s okay, but all the juice will come out of them, and as a result, the desired flavor of the drink will not be achieved.
